This post is all about 5 easy ways to boost your immune system!
1. NUTRITION
Take a second and think about your current diet. Is there anywhere you could improve it to better your health? Maybe you’re eating too much sugar, not enough protein or vegetables. One way to start is to ensure you are getting enough micronutrients from your food -eat fruits, vegetables and fiber! If your diet isn’t adequate check in with a healthcare professional and discuss some vitamins and supplement options to support your diet.
Healthy, natural, whole foods will always be the best choices for micronutrients and a boost in immunity
Some foods that can help boost immune system:
- Garlic is great for giving your immune system a boost!
- Foods with lots of vitamin C, such as, oranges, kiwi and broccoli. *keep in mind that orange juice has TONS of sugar and is not the best choice, you’re better off eating an orange*
- Antioxidant rich foods like blueberries, carrots and spinach.
- Drink lots of WATER!
2. EXERCISE
I think it’s fairly common knowledge now that exercise is a very important part of living an overall healthy lifestyle.
If working out isn’t your thing or you are sedentary for whatever reason, do what you can and just start moving more! Start going for a walk around your neighbourhood and go a little further each time. There are so many benefits of exercise! Look up some simple movements you can do in your home to get your body moving if you don’t want to go to a gym. Human bodies need movement, it’s what we were designed to do. The goal, afterall isn’t to go from 0 to 100 and crash; it’s to accelerate slowly and maintain the progress going forward. With that being said, you still have to push yourself to progress a little bit each time, even when it’s uncomfortable. You can do it!
3. SLEEP
Not getting adequate rest has many, negative health effects, and there’s evidence that not getting enough sleep can lower your immune system and make it easier for you to get sick.
Make sure you are putting your electronics away and winding down before you hop into bed. Avoid caffeine too late into the day/evening. You could experiment with different calming routines to help you ease into a better sleep. Do what works for you!
4. AVOID THINGS THAT ARE BAD FOR YOU (TOXINS)
I mean this is fairly obvious but also very important! Avoid substances that are toxic to the body (cigarettes, alcohol, processed sugars etc)
People often take a black and white approach to things, which ends up making them fail in the long run. Set small achievable goals and work up from there. Moderation is key! One way I’ve started to eliminate some toxins from my life is by making diy natural, zero waste deodorant, which you can check out if you’re interested.
5. REDUCE STRESS
I know this is easier said than done, most of us are under constant stress, this can have a damaging effect on your health. This is a hard one because we all have to deal with stressors on a daily basis. However, there are many ways we can reduce unnecessary stressors.
Things like planning ahead, preparing in advance (eg. meal prep, get out clothes for next day etc. before bed) and reducing time spent on social media and other news can really help.
We are just constantly being bombarded with stressful, negative news from every angle. It’s helpful to shut it off, take a breath, go for a walk, detach yourself from the stress when you can and be more mindful of where you are putting your energy.
Boost your immune system and live a healthier, balanced life by focusing on nutrition, exercise, adequate sleep, reducing stress and avoiding toxins.
